Portal 2 on PS3 features cross-platform chat, multiplayer and a free Steam copy

Well, Gabe did say the PS3 version was going to be better. I'd fucking say he delivered.

Portal 2 on PS3 features cross-platform chat, multiplayer and a free Steam copy

Portal 2 will be quite chummy with its PC and Mac cousins come April 20, revealing full cross-platform compatibility: PS3 users can chat with Steam users, play multiplayer with them and even partake in cloud-based storage. The disparity between the PS3 and PC/Mac versions appears to be about non-existent now.

Additionally, those who pick up the PS3 game are ensured a free voucher for the Steam Play version of the game, should they link their PSN and Steam accounts. "We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases," said Valve's Gabe Newell.

PORTAL 2 PLAYSTATION 3 STEAM FEATURES REVEALED

January 18, 2011 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the Steam features shipping with the PlayStation 3 (PS3) version of Portal 2.

Marking the debut of Steam functioning on any next generation console, the features shipping in the PS3 version of Portal 2 include cross platform play (PC/Mac vs. PS3) for multiplayer games, persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games, and cross platform chat (PC/Mac and PS3).

In addition, those who purchase Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 may unlock a Steam Play (PC & Mac) copy of Portal 2 at no additional cost by linking their PSN and Steam accounts.

"We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases."

"We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers," said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. "PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites."

These features are made possible thru the use of Steam, Valve's platform for the delivery and management of games and digital content.

Portal 2 is due for release on the PlayStation 3, PC, Mac and Xbox 360 this April.

So guys, whose ready to dominate some console noobs in multiplayer?

Admittedly portal is puzzle and the gaming is cooperative so it should be fine. This is the only way cross-platform is coming though, Microsoft discovered that personally with Shadowrun (they pit tournament winning console players against off the street PC players and the PC players wiped the floor with them)

Yeah I read about the Shadowrun beta too. It was quite funny.

I'll probably get the PS3 version now just so that I can play both in case for some reason I can't play on my PC.

Co-op might be a little frustrating for PC players, considering controllers may not be able to turn fast enough. Then again, they might have made levels easier to counter that or something, but I hope not.

That's nothing major, considering he announced it last year. Portal 2 doesn't have a big multiplayer mode though, it's mostly just co-op and I can see it being iffy. It does sound like a good sales gimmick to get Valve some extra money in their pocket, because console version is more expensive. I'll still buy the PC only version to save the 20 or 10 dollars, and after watching gameplay for it, the game requires quick reaction time in co-op and in single player, unlike the first one, something that will be harder with the joystick when compared to a mouse.

Considering the fact that the PC version will have better graphics, controls, and a better experience with a keyboard and mouse, it's just a waste buying the PS3 version since I will only probably put it in my PS3 once just to see how it runs, shelve it, and go back to the PC version. It'll be too confusing jumping out of a Portal, then having to move the joystick and wait for the character to turn and aim like this: A little bit up, a bit to the right, no wait, back up, THERE YES SHOOT, but with a keyboard and mouse, it's a reflex where you fling the mouse to where you want to aim and shoot, which takes less than a split second.

This may connect consoles and PCs more, but PC will still dominate matches against PS3. I would honestly prefer cross-platform with PS3 and 360, just to beat some 360 kids ass. This is still something whalecumming, as I hope I'll be able to use Steam in my other PS3 games, since it will be easier to respond to messages while playing the game, rather than getting off the bed and going to the PC just to tell that guy spamming me to shut the fuck up.

Plus, if your PC sucks this is the deal for you. Actually, I'll go pre-order 10 copies right now for PS3, take the voucher, shrink wrap the boxes into their "unopened" state, return them, ebay the voucher, ????, Profit.

Also, chatting with keyboard > controller.

This is gonna be Shadowrun 2:Electric Boogaloo.

In all seriousness though, this only gonna be the start. Soon we will be able to steamroll (c wat i did thar?) console nubs in multiplayer in all games. The joys.

Console nubs have aim assist, you'd be surprised how easy it can be for em to kill you.

Lol, once again with Valve basically alienating at least one console.

@Reaper - My case for my PC is fucking huge. It's a lot easier to carry around the PS3 than it is to carry around my PC. If I'm going over to a friend's house, I can just take the PS3 and it's much less of a hastle. Or I can take both if he doesn't have the game and we can play with each other without him having to spend money.

Oh, and joysticks aren't that difficult to aim with, you're just inexperienced with them because you've been playing with a mouse and keyboard. Not that that's a bad thing, PC gaming is still the best way to go.

Has there been any news on whether the Ps3 has support for custom maps?

You'd probably have to download them on PC then start a server. I guess the PS3 version would download it from the host.
